Most pressure washer pumps are variations on the same idea: three plungers, a brass head, 1,450 or 1,750 RPM on electric or 3,400 on gas. That covers the large majority of jobs.

Specialty pumps are what you reach for when one of those assumptions does not hold. The engine has a tapered shaft. The installation needs the motor on the other side. The water is hot, or corrosive, or you need a lot of flow at almost no pressure. Here is what that actually looks like in the catalog.

Low speed, long life

The RKW1514N runs at 950 RPM, delivering 4.0 GPM at 2,000 PSI on a 24 mm solid shaft. That is a third the speed of a direct-drive gas pump, which means a third the wear cycles per hour and noticeably less pulsation.

Choose it when the installation is permanent, the duty cycle is long, and pressure stability matters more than peak output. Car wash tunnels, CIP rinse loops, reclaim systems and ag sprayers are the typical homes. The tradeoff is that you need gear reduction, since no standard motor turns at 950 RPM.

Odd engine shafts

The GRKV4G35HV-F35 delivers 4.0 GPM at 4,000 PSI at 3,400 RPM on a 1 in shaft with an F35 flange, and it exists specifically for tapered-shaft gasoline engines that a standard F24 pump will not fit.

If you have an engine that nothing seems to bolt to, the flange designation is what to check before anything else. F17, F24, F25, F33, F35 and F38 are all different patterns, and a pump with the right GPM and the wrong flange is useless to you.

Low pressure, high flow

Some jobs need volume and almost no pressure: soft wash on roofs and siding, sanitizing rinse on food-contact surfaces, coil cleaning where pressure would fold the fins.

  • XMASS3G10N, 3.0 GPM at 1,000 PSI with a stainless head
  • RKA55G13HE-F17, 5.5 GPM at 1,300 PSI, nickel-plated, on a 1-1/8 in shaft with an F17 flange
  • XWLA13G15N, 13 GPM at 1,500 PSI for large-area rinse

Buying a 3,000 PSI pump and turning the unloader down is not the same thing. A pump run well below its design pressure does not last longer for it, and you paid for pressure you are throwing away.

Mirrored and left-hand builds

On a skid where two pumps face each other, or where the frame forces the motor to the wrong side, you need a left-hand shaft. AR marks these SX. XWL41.21N-SX at 10.8 GPM / 3,000 PSI, SXW15.35-SX at 4 GPM / 5,000 PSI and RTX70-DD-SX at 18.5 GPM / 2,900 PSI all come in mirrored form.

This is not a detail to solve with a longer belt. Running a right-hand pump backwards damages it.

Hot water and chemical service

Two different problems people often merge. Heat is handled by the HT high-temperature builds, such as XWL50.15NHT at 13.2 GPM / 2,175 PSI rated to 185°F, or XWAM8G35NHT at 8 GPM / 3,500 PSI.

Chemistry is handled by a stainless head: JK-SS1515N at 4 GPM / 2,200 PSI, or the wider stainless range. If you have both problems, you need both features; a hot-water rating does not confer chemical resistance.

One caution when you are reading across the stainless families in particular: the part number does not reliably tell you the pressure. Two pumps can carry the same G number and be rated thousands of PSI apart depending on whether they are the solid-shaft or the flange build. Flow and the shaft and flange suffixes decode dependably; check pressure against the listing for the exact model.

Cross-reference replacements

Sometimes the specialty requirement is simply that the pump has to match something already installed. RTX-I 30.500N is a cross-reference for the RTX-SS30.500, built for compatibility rather than for a new spec.

If you are replacing rather than designing, send the model number off the old pump. Matching an existing installation is usually easier than it looks, and almost always easier than redesigning the frame around a pump that nearly fits.

Specialty pumps when none of these fit

Plenty of AR’s specialty configurations are special order rather than stock, which is exactly what makes them specialty. Describe the constraint, the shaft, the flange, the temperature, the chemistry, the space, and there is usually a configuration that solves it without a custom frame.
