General Purpose Brass & Stainless Swivels

Brass or stainless fittings is the single most repeated decision in pressure washing hardware. It comes up on the pump head, the swivel, the quick connects, the hose reel, the surface cleaner. Most people answer it by price, and most of the time that is the wrong way round.

The right question is not which is better. It is what is in your water.

What actually attacks brass

Brass is a copper-zinc alloy and it handles clean water indefinitely. What it does not handle is:

  • Chlorides, from salt air, seawater, road salt, or reclaimed water. These cause dezincification, where the zinc leaches out and leaves a weak, porous copper structure behind.
  • Chlorinated sanitizers, the standard chemistry in food and dairy plants.
  • Caustics and acids used in industrial cleaning cycles.
  • Ammonia compounds, which cause stress corrosion cracking in brass specifically.

If none of those describe your work, brass will outlast the machine it is fitted to, and the extra cost of stainless buys you nothing.

Brass and stainless swivels

The swivel between the hose and the gun is the accessory that makes the biggest difference to an operator’s day. It lets the gun rotate while the hose stays put, which removes the twist that otherwise builds all morning.

The SW701 is stainless, 3/8 in MNPT by FNPT, rated 4,500 PSI. Stainless is the right default here even for cold-water contractors, because this is the fitting that gets dropped in mud, dragged through detergent and left wet in a truck overnight. It sees worse conditions than anything else on the rig.

On a hose reel, the swivel rotates continuously under pressure rather than occasionally, which is why it is the most common leak point on a wash rig. The BE85402005S is the stainless replacement for the AR-REEL100, with a Viton O-ring for heat and chemical resistance.

Quick connects in brass and stainless

Here the brass-versus-stainless decision has real money attached, because you need several of them.

Brass, for ordinary water and general contracting: AL-QC3/8MB, AL-QC1/4MB, AL-PLUG3/8MB.

Stainless, for salt, sanitizer or hot water: AL-QC3/8BSS, AL-QC1/4BSS, AL-PLUG3/8MBSS.

One rule worth following: do not mix. A brass fitting threaded into a stainless head in salt service sets up a galvanic cell, and the brass is the one that corrodes. Matching materials through the connection is more important than either material on its own.

M22 and consumer thread

Equipment from big-box machines usually carries M22 threads rather than NPT. You do not need to replace it to use professional accessories, you need an adapter: AL557-B converts M22 to a 3/8 quick connect plug, AL456-B and AL455-B cover the common reductions.

That is usually the cheapest upgrade path from a consumer machine: keep the machine, replace the connections, add a swivel.

Fittings for ultra high pressure

Above about 5,000 PSI, none of the above applies. The ARF70 and ARF070 couplers are rated 10,150 PSI: ARF70-3/8M, ARF70-3/8F, ARF070-1/2F and the rest of the family. A standard coupler on a hydroblasting rig is a projectile waiting to happen.

Brass or stainless fittings: decide it once

  • Salt, sanitizer, caustic or hot water: stainless throughout. The premium is recovered the first time you do not have to replace a corroded fitting mid-job.
  • Clean municipal water, cold: brass is genuinely fine, except on the swivel, where the environment is worse than the water.
  • Mixed fleet: pick one material and standardise. Mixed fittings across a crew cause more lost time than either material ever will.
  • Above 5,000 PSI: rating first, material second.
