Pressure washer hose reels exist because a hose left loose on a rig gets dragged over gravel, run over, kinked at the coupling and stored wet in a coil that sets a permanent twist. Hoses are one of the more expensive consumables in pressure washing, and most of them die of handling rather than pressure.

A reel fixes that, and it fixes the tripping hazard and the five minutes you lose at the start and end of every job. Here is the range, and the two specs that actually decide which one you need.

Temperature, not pressure

Most people size a reel by pressure and get caught by temperature. If you run hot water at all, temperature is the number that matters, because the failure is at the swivel seal and it happens gradually enough that people blame the hose. Temperature ratings are not published across this range, so tell us your water temperature and we will confirm which reel and swivel will take it.

Restaurant hood cleaning, grease removal and food plant sanitation are all hot-water jobs. Cold-water driveway work is not.

Choosing a swivel material

The swivel is the part of a reel that fails. It rotates under pressure every time the hose moves, which is thousands of cycles a season.

A stainless swivel, on the 5703, 5704 and AR151, resists the pitting that makes a brass swivel start weeping. That is the real difference between the 5702 and the 5704, more than the 1,000 PSI on the label. If you run hot water or chemicals, buy the stainless one and stop thinking about it. The BE85402005S stainless replacement swivel with a Viton O-ring fits the AR-REEL100 if you want to upgrade rather than replace the reel.

How much hose

More is not better. Every extra foot of 3/8 in hose costs you pressure at the nozzle, and 250 ft of it is heavy to drag and slow to reel in.

• 50 ft for a cart, a small trailer, or a fixed bay where you work close to the machine.
• 100 ft for most contractor work. This is the practical default: reaches the back of a house or around a truck without a pressure penalty you will notice.
• 250 ft for drop-line installations, large facilities, and jobs where moving the machine is harder than dragging hose. Size up the hose ID if you go this far, or account for the loss.

Mounting hose reels

These are bolt-on, heavy-gauge steel frames, and the frame is only as good as what it is bolted to. On a trailer or truck body, mount to structure rather than to sheet metal, and use the AR40438 universal mounting kit if the reel is not landing on an existing pattern.

Mount it where the hose feeds off the drum in the direction you actually walk. A reel bolted in the wrong orientation adds a twist on every pull, which is the exact problem you bought it to solve.

Keeping a hose reel working

• Check the swivel for weeping under pressure. Replace the O-ring at the first sign, before the sealing surface scores.
• Reel the hose in under light tension so it lays evenly. A hose that piles up on one side of the drum wears on the flange.
• Keep the drag adjustment set so the drum does not overrun when you pull. Free-spinning reels birdnest.
• Rinse the frame after saltwater or chemical work, even the stainless ones, and especially the powder-coated ones.
