Most pump failures that get blamed on the pump are actually oil failures. Wrong viscosity, wrong additive package, or simply never changed. A bottle of oil costs less than lunch and a rebuild costs a day of work, which makes this the highest-return maintenance decision on the whole rig.

Here is what each AR fluid is for, and which one your pump takes.

Why pump oil is not motor oil

Automotive oils are detergent oils. Detergents are there to hold combustion soot in suspension, which is exactly what you want in an engine and exactly what you do not want in a pump crankcase. In a triplex pump the detergent package causes foaming, and foam does not carry a load. The film breaks down at the crank pin, the bearing runs dry, and the pump gets loud before it gets expensive.

Pump oil is non-detergent for that reason. It also has to do five jobs at once: lubricate the plunger and crank interfaces, carry heat away from the crankcase, resist corrosion, keep seals supple rather than drying them out, and stay stable enough that pressure and flow do not wander.

Which oil for which pump

The split is simple. Small frame pumps take the 4.5 oz synthetic because that is roughly their entire crankcase capacity. Standard triplex pumps take 30W non-detergent in 16 oz. The big industrial RT-series pumps take the high-load 75W-90 by the gallon, because they hold a lot more oil and run under load for far longer.

If you are not sure which family your pump is in, the model prefix tells you. Anything starting RT is industrial. Anything starting RM, RQ, RX, SJ or SX is small frame. Most of the rest are standard triplex.

Pump saver, and why freezing kills more pumps than pressure

AR64511C is pump saver antifreeze in 16 oz bottles, twelve to a case. It displaces water from the head, coats the internals against corrosion, and keeps seals from drying out in storage.

Water expands about nine percent when it freezes. There is nowhere for that to go inside a pump head, so the head cracks. It is not a repair, it is a replacement, and it happens on the first hard night after someone leaves a rig on the trailer. If your equipment sees temperatures below freezing at all, run pump saver through it before storage every time. This is the single cheapest insurance in pressure washing.

Pump oil service intervals

• First change at 50 hours. Break-in oil picks up the metal that machining leaves behind. Getting it out early matters more than any later change.
• Then every 300 hours or 3 months, whichever comes first. Calendar time counts even on a pump that barely runs, because condensation still gets in.
• Check the sight glass before every use. Most AR pumps have one. It takes two seconds and catches the two failures that matter.
• Milky oil means water intrusion. Stop. That is a seal, and running it will take the bearings with it.
• Do not overfill. Too much oil foams for the same reason detergent does. Fill to the mark, not above it.

What this actually costs you

A 16 oz bottle of pump oil and ten minutes, three or four times a year. Against that: a valve and seal rebuild, or on a cracked head, a whole new pump. Contractors who keep oil on the shelf and change it on a schedule get years out of pumps that other people replace annually, and the difference is not the pump.
