XWL Series Solid Shaft Pump by AR North America

Most commercial pumps top out somewhere between 4 and 9 GPM. That covers a wand and a small surface cleaner. It does not cover a wash bay running three guns, or a 30 in surface cleaner, or a dairy parlour rinsing down at the end of a shift.

The XWL series starts where those stop: 10.8 to 13.2 GPM at 1,450 RPM on a 24 mm solid shaft, with a 32 oz crankcase because at that size the oil is doing the cooling.

The XWL pump range

Model Flow Pressure EBHP Note
XWL42.15N 11.0 GPM 2,200 PSI 16.6 The common one
XWL42.20N 11.0 GPM 3,000 PSI 22.6 Same flow, more pressure
XWL41.21N-SX 10.8 GPM 3,000 PSI 22.2 Left-hand shaft
XWL48.21N 12.68 GPM 3,000 PSI 26.1
XWL50.20NB 13.0 GPM 3,000 PSI 26.7 Bronze rods
XWL50.20HNB 13.2 GPM 3,000 PSI 27.1 Nickel-plated head

Hot water XWL pumps

XWL42.15NHT at 11 GPM / 2,200 PSI and XWL50.15NHT at 13.2 GPM / 2,175 PSI are the HT builds, rated to 185°F. Do not substitute a standard model into a hot water system; the seals are the difference and they are not interchangeable.

Stainless XWL pumps

For sanitary and corrosive work the XWL-SS line covers the same flow range with a stainless head: XWLSS33.08N at 8.72 GPM / 1,200 PSI through XWLSS50.20NB at 13.2 GPM / 3,000 PSI with a 316L head.

Sizing a motor for XWL pumps

EBHP is GPM times PSI divided by 1,460, and the XWL range runs from about 17 to 27 HP at the shaft. Add 10 to 20 percent and you are specifying 20 to 30 HP motors. Confirm your electrical service before choosing the model, not after.

Note what the table shows: XWL42.15N and XWL42.20N move the same water, and the pressure difference costs you 6 HP. If you do not need 3,000 PSI, the 2,200 PSI model does the same rinsing on a smaller motor.

Why 1,450 RPM

A pump moving 13 GPM has large plungers and large seals, and at high speed the friction heat becomes the limiting factor. Running at 1,450 RPM with a 32 oz crankcase is what makes continuous duty realistic. The tradeoff is size and weight, around 34 lbs, and a four-pole motor or a belt reduction rather than a direct-coupled 3,400 RPM drive.

What these commercial pumps let you do

  • Run multiple guns off one pump and one motor, instead of buying two machines
  • Drive a 30 in surface cleaner at working speed rather than a crawl
  • Rinse large areas fast, which is the whole job in livestock barns and food plants
  • Hold pressure through long hose runs, where a low-flow pump falls off at the nozzle

The constraint is supply. 13 GPM is far beyond what a garden hose delivers, so these need a tank feed or a dedicated supply line, sized generously. An XWL starved at the inlet cavitates, and cavitation on a pump this size is an expensive noise.

Where XWL pumps are used

Fleet wash bays for trucks, buses and heavy equipment. Rental depots. Municipal sanitation. Food processing and agricultural washdown. Poultry, hog and cattle facilities. Large-area surface cleaning for contractors and municipalities. Mining and construction wash pads.

Servicing XWL pumps

Fully rebuildable: valve kits, Ø28 piston kits, water seals, oil seals, piston guides and rail-mount kits are all available, including hot water seal sets for the HT builds. Part numbers differ between the standard and hot water versions, so confirm against your exact MPN.

At this size the economics are not close. A rebuild is a fraction of a replacement, and with oil changes on schedule and a clean inlet these run for years.
