Choosing the Right Pump Package for Your Industry

A pump package is a pump, an unloader sized to it, and the fittings to bolt the two together. Sorting pump packages by industry is the fastest way to buy the right one, because what you clean and how much of it there is changes the answer in ways a spec sheet does not show.

Here is how the package range maps to industries, with the reasoning rather than just the recommendation.

Construction and heavy equipment

RKV4G40-PKG, 4.0 GPM at 4,000 PSI.

Dried mud, concrete residue and heavy grease need pressure to break the bond, and 4 GPM to carry it off before it dries again. This is also the right pairing for a 20 in surface cleaner on a wash pad. Needs a 13 to 15 HP engine, so a 420cc class.

Fleet washing

RKV5G32D-VRT3PKG, 5.0 GPM at 3,200 PSI.

Trucks and buses are a rinsing problem, not a cutting problem. Soap does the work and volume removes it. Trading 800 PSI for an extra gallon per minute is the right direction here, and the difference shows up in how long it takes to rinse a trailer.

Agriculture and livestock washdown

RCV3G27D-VR54-PKG, 3.0 GPM at 2,700 PSI.

Barns, tractors and poultry houses. The moderate pressure matters: you are cleaning painted equipment, wood and sometimes animal-contact surfaces where 4,000 PSI does damage. The VR54 unloader is factory-matched to the pump’s flow, which is one less thing to get wrong.

Property maintenance and residential

RCV25G27D-VR54-PKG, 2.5 GPM at 2,700 PSI.

Siding, driveways and decks. 2.5 GPM runs comfortably off a domestic hose bib, which a 5 GPM pump does not, and 2,700 PSI cleans without stripping paint or furring cedar. Cheaper engine, less water, less risk of doing damage you have to explain.

Industrial and high duty

RKV55G40-VRT3PKG, 5.5 GPM at 4,000 PSI.

Factories, tank cleaning, graffiti removal. Both flow and pressure at the top of what a gas engine package can carry. At 15 EBHP this is the edge of engine-driven territory; above it you are into electric and three-phase.

Pump packages by industry: the two numbers that decide it

What pump packages need from your water supply

A domestic hose bib delivers roughly 4 to 6 GPM, less through 100 ft of hose. Buying a 5.5 GPM pump and feeding it from a garden hose gives you a cavitating pump and no more cleaning than a 4 GPM one. Time how long it takes to fill a five gallon bucket; that is your real ceiling. Above about 4 GPM you need a tank and a proper feed.

Matching your engine to pump packages

EBHP is GPM times PSI divided by 1,460, and small-engine horsepower ratings are optimistic. Add 20 percent:

  • 2.5 GPM at 2,700 PSI, 4.6 EBHP, 6.5 HP engine
  • 3.0 GPM at 2,700 PSI, 5.5 EBHP, 6.5 to 9 HP engine
  • 4.0 GPM at 4,000 PSI, 11.0 EBHP, 13 to 15 HP engine
  • 5.0 GPM at 3,200 PSI, 11.0 EBHP, 13 to 15 HP engine
  • 5.5 GPM at 4,000 PSI, 15.1 EBHP, 15 HP or more

Pump package unloader versions

Most packages come in more than one unloader configuration, and the suffix tells you which: VR54, VRT, VRT3. The unloader is sized to the pump’s flow, so a factory-matched package removes the most common cause of a home-built rig never reaching its rated pressure.

If you are replacing a pump on an existing machine and keeping the old unloader, check that its flow rating matches the new pump before assuming it will work.

Hot water pump packages

If you are adding a heater, the package has to be rated for it. RRV4G40-VRT-HWPKG is the hot water version at 4.0 GPM / 4,000 PSI. A standard package on a hot water system loses its water seals early, and the symptom is a gradual pressure loss that gets blamed on the pump.

Not sure which one fits? Send your engine size, your water source and what you clean most, and you will get one package back rather than a category to browse.
