RotoJet 500: Maximum Cleaning Power in One Nozzle

A turbo nozzle is the cheapest meaningful upgrade you can make to a pressure washer. You are not adding pressure or flow, you are changing what the water does when it leaves the tip, and on the right job that is worth more than a bigger machine.

The RotoJet 500 is the top of the RotoJet range, rated to 7,250 PSI. Before you buy one, there is one number you have to get right, and it is not the pressure rating.

How a turbo nozzle works

A standard nozzle makes a fan. The water spreads across the fan angle, so impact force per square inch drops as the angle widens. A 40-degree tip rinses. A 0-degree tip cuts but only hits a spot the size of a pencil eraser.

A turbo nozzle takes that zero-degree jet and spins it in a cone. You get the impact force of a pinpoint stream applied across a circle several inches wide. In practice that means roughly the cleaning rate of a 0-degree tip with something close to the coverage of a 25-degree fan.

Inside, the jet drives a ceramic-tipped rotor around a seat. There is no gearing and nothing electrical. It is the water doing the work, which is why nozzle condition and water cleanliness both matter more than people expect.

Orifice size is the spec that matters

This is the part that gets skipped, and it is the reason most turbo nozzles disappoint.

The number after the dash in the part number is the orifice size, and it has to match your machine’s flow and pressure. It is the same sizing you would use for a standard nozzle. Get it wrong and one of two things happens:

  • Orifice too large: the pump cannot build pressure through it. You get lots of water and no cleaning force, and the machine feels broken.
  • Orifice too small: pressure spikes above the machine’s rating. The unloader dumps constantly, or worse, it does not, and you are running the pump against a restriction it was not designed for.

The 500 series is sold in these sizes:

Model Orifice Rating Fitting
ROTOJET500-055 055 7,250 PSI 1/4″ F
ROTOJET500-06 06 7,250 PSI 1/4″ F
ROTOJET500-065 065 7,250 PSI 1/4″ F
ROTOJET500-09 09 7,250 PSI 1/4″ F

You may not need the 500

The pressure rating is a ceiling, not a performance figure. A 7,250 PSI nozzle on a 3,000 PSI machine does not clean any harder than a correctly sized 3,700 PSI nozzle on the same machine. You are paying for headroom you are not using.

Match the family to your machine:

Series Rated to Orifice sizes
RotoJet 255 3,700 PSI 05 to 12
RotoJet 310 4,500 PSI 03 to 07
RotoJet 400 5,800 PSI 020 to 20
RotoJet 500 7,250 PSI 055 to 09

The 400 series has by far the widest orifice range, which makes it the right answer for most machines. The 500 is for genuinely high-pressure systems.

Where a turbo nozzle earns its money

  • Concrete and masonry, where the rotating stream reaches into the pores a fan spray skims over
  • Graffiti and coating removal, where impact force does work that would otherwise take solvent
  • Heavy equipment, frames and undercarriages with caked mud and grease
  • Industrial degreasing
  • Fleet washing on the hard parts, wheels and chassis rather than paint

Where it does damage

A turbo nozzle is a zero-degree jet. Treat it that way.

  • Vinyl and aluminum siding. It will cut through and drive water into the wall cavity.
  • Wood decking. It carves visible spiral tracks into softwood, and they do not sand out easily.
  • Vehicle paint, trim and glass. No.
  • Mortar joints and soft brick. It will remove the mortar.
  • Anything you cannot afford to test first. Try an inconspicuous corner before you commit to a wall.

The rotation makes the nozzle cover more area. It does not make the jet gentler at any given point.

Making the RotoJet 500 last

Turbo nozzles fail from grit, and they fail as a gradual loss of rotation rather than an obvious break. If yours has stopped spinning or sounds uneven, the rotor seat is worn. Check your inlet filter, because that is usually the cause.

The RotoJet line is serviceable and rebuildable rather than disposable, which is most of the difference between these and the cheap ones.
